Jane’s Walk 2023 – Day 14
We are joined today by our son Oli, his wife Lois and their daughters Amelie, Annabelle, Eliza and their large labrador, Otis. They have come up from Cambridge that morning and do well to arrive on time at 9.30.
We spend a happy morning with the children and dogs paddling in the sea and throwing endless balls. The children are disappointed there are no seals around today, but we are now on the outskirts of Great Yarmouth, which is probably not conducive for basking seals.
We had a happy lunch, with lots of chat and laughter, in an old Edwardian hotel looking over the sea. The rest of the day we spend navigating the streets of Great Yarmouth, which, like Cromer, must have been a fine seaside resort in the early 20th Century and although full of the usual tourist clutter, the centre has a certain style about it.
There was some sort of fete in town, with many streets closed to traffic and many street entertainments.
We eventually cross the river Yare and back down towards its mouth. The road is flanked by warehouses and boat-building sites, finally arriving at the large harbour of Gorlestone on Sea. This must have been an important shipping terminal, but sadly, there is not a ship in sight today.
We say goodbye to our family, who we are proud of, having completed all 8 miles today.
